– quoting John Sherman –

“All your suffering is caused by the belief that you are your life, your thoughts, your story. The only solution is the truth about what you are. And that is easy to find: you are, after all, always here.”

This belief that I am this mind, this story, this set of thoughts and conditioned behaviors, this character who has hopes and dreams, and history, and future, and the desire to be something. Our belief that we are that is the problem.

Nothing that happens within the story that I believe myself to be is a problem at all. It is just the story that I believe myself to be. The only problem is the belief that I am that person, that mind, that story. The whole show is a story about me. Every thought is part of that story about me. It’s not me.

So Ramana tells us: all the problem, all the suffering, all the aggression, all the hatefulness, all the sense of lack, and so forth, that afflict us,  all these things arise only from a false belief that I am this story.

We need not commit ourselves to a lifetime of spiritual practice, or devotion to a guru, or anything at all. We need only see that what I’ve always wanted, is to know what I am, and that knowing what I am is well, really easy. I am, after all, always here. No matter what else is happening, no matter what else comes and goes, I am here. I am never absent. Never, not for one flickering nanosecond, am I absent. Thoughts are absent, ideas are absent, satisfaction and dissatisfaction, these are absent, but me, I am never not here.

OK, this moment is all there ever is.” You might as well become friendly with it… acknowledge it, give it attention, in whatever form it comes. Because the “form” is not the moment, it is the form that this moment takes… the now. It’s not what happens… the now is not what happens, it’s this space in which it happens.

The biggest challenge for most spiritual seekers is to surrender their self importance, and see the emptiness of their own personal story. It is your personal story that you need to awaken from in order to be free.
